Manager MicroBlog
There is one special quality that you can develop that will guarantee you greater success, accomplishment and happiness in life. Of a thousand principles for success developed over the ages, this one quality or practice will do more to assure that you accomplish wonderful things with your life than anything else. This quality is so important that, if you don't develop it to a high degree, it is impossible for you to ever achieve what you are truly capable of achieving.
Machiavelli wrote in The Prince, "It is better to be feared than loved." In order to be a successful manager, however, you must be both. I was in retail management for years, and was always quite respected in the stores I ran. People knew that they could come to me with any problems, and I would be fair in trying to resolve them, but that you did not want to test me, or take advantage of my benevolence.
In order to manage successfully, you have to remember certain very important things. The first, of course, is to keep your professional life and your personal life separate.
Secondly, remember that it is important to compromise (those who bend do not break), but to stress what issues or regulations are very important to you, and not be afraid to admonish or punish for breaking those rules. I was known as a rather laid-back manager, but those under me always knew that there were many things they could not get away with. I managed to seem permissive, and yet strict at the same time. In other words, yes, all corporate regulations may be important to someone, but just like parenting, pick your battles. When you make a stand for something, it will seem much more important if you don't make a big deal about everything. Otherwise, you will lose credibility.
Diplomacy is essential. Whenever possible, admonish employees in private. Never do so when they are surrounded by co-workers. Remember that positive reinforcement is an effective tool, also. Praise for a job well-done is what most people tend to say is lacking in their job. Everyone craves and likes to be appreciated, and when you have employees doing good work, they deserve a few words of praise. It is easily done.
And finally, remember to mix the two, when possible, if telling someone that you did not like their performance on something. It softens the criticism, and makes it less likely for them to resent you. You may say something like, "You did an excellent job on cleaning the front end last night, but the PVs weren't straightened as they should have been."
